It may be winter outside, but inside the shopping centres it’s raining springtime styles! From the must-have pieces to the celebrities who influence how we wear them, here are the top trends of spring 2012.

Trend #1. Power Palette

There’s nothing subtle or delicate about this season’s crop of hot colours. Ultra-saturated shades inspired by top pop stars – think Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga – are pouring into our warm-weather wardrobes. Go for bubblegum pink, amped-up lavender, megawatt yellow… Fluorescent shades are also having a moment, so ditch the ho-hum blacks and beiges in favour of something a little more festive. For maximum style appeal, try wearing one hue from head to toe or come up with your own unexpected yet utterly chic colour combinations, like a vibrant orange top with electric-blue jeans, for a runway-worthy colour-blocked look. For a splashy yet more subtle look (read: works at the office), add crisp white into the mix.

Trend #2. Hawaiian Tropic

Look out, Liberty prints. There’s a new fave floral in town, and we’re saying aloha to its exotic vibe. From the blown-up palm trees at Dries Van Noten to the whimsical pop-art-inspired florals at DKNY, the best patterns of the season are loud and kitschy. It’s just a matter of time before this fun trend sweeps the closets of trendsetters like It girl Alexa Chung, fashion icon Margherita Missoni and real-life royal Kate Middleton, whose favourite label, Issa, showed a plethora of whimsical patterns for spring 2012. To avoid shocking your boss, wear it under a solid blazer.

Trend #3. Get Sporty

Jessica Biel, Cameron Diaz and Heidi Klum are just a few of the stars constantly being snapped mid-jog, so it’s only natural that their Dri-Fit-meets-fabulous fitnesswear is making an impact on runway fashions. To elevate the sporty look to stylish new heights, designers gave the chic treatment to gym-bound staples like nylon shorts, spotted at Marc by Marc Jacobs (teamed with a grey sweatshirt, naturally) and zip-down jackets at VPL and Alexander Wang. When a trend is as stylish as it is comfortable, we’re always on board!

Trend #4. Femme Fatale

On runways like Dolce & Gabbana, Rodarte and Blugirl, the retro references made a strong case for full circle skirts (talk about sweet and flirty!) and bralette tops (the perfect sexy-meets-innocent look). Translation? Ditch the tough-girl act of yester-season – complete with its studs and super-short, tight silhouette – for this soft and romantic new look. And not to worry, you’ll be in great company: Fans of the pin-up-inspired style include some of Hollywood’s elite, including New Girl star Zooey Deschanel, Rihanna and Dakota Fanning.

Trend #5. Fashion Tribe

Ever-present in some form or another in this year’s spring and summer collections, 2012’s take on tribal is a bright, cheery one that is inspired by pop art and African safaris. Colourful ikat was spotted at Paul & Joe, fringe at Etro and zigzag patterns at Carven. The quintessential bohemia-meets-urban-chic style is one we know will be sported by the likes of Nicole Richie, Diane Kruger and Florence Welsh. But don’t stop at just fabrics: Accents like an armful of brightly hued bangles, a statement-making bib necklace and heavily embellished sandals are some of the season’s must-haves.
